Biography:
Alfredo Jaar (Chilean, b. 1956) is an artist, architect and filmmaker
whose work for the past two decades has explored the public’s
desensitization to images and the limitations of art to represent
events such as genocides, epidemics, and famines. Widely known for
his work in the aftermath of the Rwandan Genocide, Jaar has a lifelong
commitment to Africa and has concentrated his work on the people,
places and issues that constitute the continent. His work has been
exhibited nationally and internationally, including the Venice,
Istanbul and São Paulo Biennials, The New Museum of Contemporary
Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, Whitechapel Gallery
and the MIT List Visual Arts Center.
About the Work:
Jaar's film Muxima, meaning heart in Kimbundu, is
a melancholic lament, dedicated to the people of Angola. Divided
into ten Cantos, or extended meditations, Jaar's film is beautifully
and richly guided rhythmically and conceptually by the five different
folk versions of the song titled Muxima. This film still, mounted
on plexi, is partnered with a black opposite, perhaps is a representation
of the re-occurring blind spot the world has to the oil economy
and extreme poverty of Angola.
