Biography:
Andreas Gursky (German, b. 1955) is one of the most important contemporary
photographers today. His large-scale, color photographs, distinctive
for their incisive and critical look at the effect of capitalism
and globalization on contemporary life, have dominated the contemporary
art market since the mid 1990s. His imagery ranges from the vast,
anonymous architecture of modern day hotel lobbies, apartment buildings
and warehouses to stock exchanges and parliaments in places. Gursky's
work is collected privately and publicly, and he has exhibited extensively
including São Paolo Biennial, Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Museum
of Modern Art, Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Centre Georges
Pompidou, and SF MOMA.
About the Work:
In many respects, Centre Georges Pompidou is an archetypical Gursky image. A panoramic interior of the famous Parisian Museum, the industrial lights above mimic the seriality of the exhibition tables below ñ as a few scattered people bend down to view the work. This work this heavily references Leonardo's' Last Supper', his use of vanishing lines, a bright back surface and of course, the 12 apostles.
Market Information:
Gursky has been a powerhouse in the contemporary art market for years, and is showing no signs of slowing down! An enormously popular image, Centre Georges Pompidou offers our collectors a perfect entry point to purchase a Gursky. This work has auctioned for as high as $18,000!
