Biography:
Catarina Leitão's (German/Portuguese, b. 1970) work investigates
the desire to domesticate our natural environment and, at the same
time, fetishizes the natural aspects of our manmade urban surroundings.
In her drawings, sculptures and public works, Leitão creates
images that pit man versus nature, perhaps even proposing a crafted
co-existence. Leitão's work has been exhibited at P.S.1's
Greater New York, the Center for Book Arts and the Andrea Rosen
Gallery in addition to an upcoming exhibition at the Aldrich Contemporary
Art Museum.
About the Work:
The four works currently on ArtCycle are representative of
two distinct series, Natural Selections and Thicket.
In a survival of the fittest, these paintings depict manmade machines
cohabitating with tendrils and vegetation, seemingly the two feel
right at home in one another’s snares.
Market Information:
Leitão jumped onto the New York scene in 2005 after being
included in the Greater New York show at P.S.1. Since then,
she has exhibited internationally. The works on offer here at ArtCycle
are below market value and present a wonderful opportunity to own
an international artist at a great price.
