Biography:
Sue de Beer (American, 1973) is an engaging filmograher whose work
focuses on the lives of "disaffected suburban American teenagers"
within the contemporary frame of memory and history. De Beer immerses
her subjects into real and imagined, highly stylized theatrical
scenarios, all the while focusing on the terribly real psyches of
her young characters. De Beer had exhibited internationally, including
the New Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, PS1/MOMA, the
Brooklyn Museum and the Reina Sofia in Madrid. Her work was most
recently included in the critically acclaimed Busan Biennial in
South Korea.
About the Work:
The Kiss, a titled film-still from her longer video
piece, "The Dark Hearts" is a visually stunning photograph.
The film's narrative documents two teenagers sneaking out to go
prowl their neighborhood. The work shows the moment before De Beer's
Goth-punk lovers kiss after an exchange of spiked neckwear. In what
would be an endearing moment of young love, de Beer explores the
subculture of teenage fascination with doom, and destruction, teen
loneliness and the impending adult existence of her characters.
Market Information:
Despite the slowing art market, De Beer's work recently had a healthy
run at the fall auctions. This is a very strong image in the "The
Dark Hearts", a sold-out edition, offered at a highly competitive
price.
