Artist Biography:
Katherine Bernhardt (American, b. 1975) is a young artist who has garnered an impressive reputation and following among collectors worldwide. Known for her expressionist portraits of models ripped straight from fashion magazines, she paints from the perspective of an obsessed fan - with a directness and energy that is straight out of a can. Prior to this series, her paintings focused on abstraction, incorporating landscapes, modernist architecture and collage. Since receiving her Master of Fine Arts in 2000, Bernhardt's work has been collected by Charles Saatchi and has been exhibited extensively both in New York and abroad.
About the
Work:
Geyser is a beautiful and bright work depicting a spirited geyser burst from the green brown earth. Bernhardt incorporates her usual abstracted brushwork with a highly saturated blue-sky background, a blue that ever so subtly changes over the canvas. Using spray paint to suggest mist of rolling off this natural pheneomon, this work is an amazing example of her landscape scenes, a rarity in her oeuvre, yet a telling work by this accomplished artist.
Market Information:
Bernhardt's work is in prominent collections such as Saatchi and has been acclaimed by notable critics such as Jerry Saltz. For an artist of this recognition, her works are refreshingly reasonable in price. Geyser represents an important crossroads in style, yet is selling at a price point well below her similarly placed contemporaries.
