Artist Biography:
A collaboration between Chicago-based artists Luke Batten (American b. 1968) and Jonathan Sadler (American b. 1965), New Catalogue is a visual research project that plays on the notion of a stock image bank, utilizing historical, cultural, and fictional signs to create visual hybrids and multiple narratives. Working through in-depth series, the two collaborators present comprehensive examinations on various themes (from hedges and fires to cheerleaders and political leaders). Batten and Sadler’s work is included in numerous public and private collections, and has recently been shown at the International Biennale of Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Prague, Czech Republic and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
About the Work:
In the series Big Ten Co-Eds with Ski Mask, the artists present eleven teenage girls, all in private prep school attire and donning illicit grey ski masks. In print No. 1, a young girl stands by a tree before the brick institutional preparatory school, the winter light and grey tree easily accessorize the peculiarity of the situation – is she hiding? Ready to attack? A social pariah?
