Artist Biography:
Artist-as-provocateur, artist as social commentator, artist as purist - all express the many faces of Andres Serrano (American, b. 1950). Most recognized for igniting the culture wars of the 1990's with the now subdued and meditative Piss Christ – Serrano has long transcended his original infamy. His photographs explore roles and relations within racism, religion, the body and sex. Serrano been lauded by critics worldwide and has exhibited internationally including shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the MoMA, Centre Georges Pompidou and the Tate Modern.

About the Work:
In 1990, Serrano exhibited Klansman, a series of portraits depicting hooded Ku-Klux Klan members, raising questions on the symbolism of racism in America. These images, though confrontational, both reveal the "moral and political dilemmas" of showing, full-frontally, the face of contemporary hatred.

Market Information:
Serrano is an auction superstar – consistently selling his works far above the high estimate and even breaking records. As an edition, this is a great opportunity to collect a leading contemporary artist at a below market price.
