Breuning:
Olaf Breuning (Swiss, b. 1970) is one of the most most prolific
contemporary artists. Utilizing a variety of media, such as photography,
installation, drawing, sculpture, film and video, Breuning has constructed
an aesthetic vernacular that draws much of its inspiration from
popular culture, while playfully walking the line between the authentic
and the hyperbolic. Breuning's work is collected worlwide by major
institutions. Most recently his work has been shown at Metro Pictures,
Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the
Hayward Gallery in London.
About the Work:
Finish Funny is a classic example of Breuning's
graphite work, and noire humor. A car flies through a road barrier
and off a cliff while the passengers inside throw their arms up
in the air. Though far from "funny", the simple outline
drawing "re-mixes" innocent childhood stick figures with
twisted adult fantasies that are literally "over the edge."
