Biography:
Thomas Demand (German, b. 1964), both reproducer and illusionist,
is known for his intricate and obsessively perfect hand made landscapes,
which he then photographs. Conceptually Demand is a sculptor as
much as he is a photographer, a documentarian whose life-size reconstructions,
present only in his two-dimensional photographs, historicize our
contemporary world in cardboard and paper. Demand has exhibited
internationally, including the Museum of Modern Art, MassMOCA, The
Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and
is currently the focus of his largest retrospective at Nationalgalerie
in Berlin.
About the Work:
While the range of Demand's architectural types and subject
matter has gradually expanded over time, his obsessive portrayal
of the interior is perfectly encapsulated in Detail X, Still
Life on Office Desk. The work depicts the mundane contents
of an ordinary home desk: paper, scissors, and glue, all in drab
colors on a dark wooden platform. Toying perhaps with the traditional
artist materials, Demand here has not once, but twice, reproduced
this "craft" table and coolly disquieted the real and
the artificial.
Market Information:
Demand's large-scale work always sells to the highest bidder, often
in the $100,000 range! Detail X offers the Demand admirer
an affordable way to appreciate this contemporary master, and with
a beautiful example of his oeuvre!
